In the name of God Amen the sixth day of August in the first year of the reign of the sovereign Lord James the second by the grace of God of England and Scotland France and Ireland king defender of the faith and a domino 1685

I Bernard Strodwick of the Parish of St Buttolphs Bishopsgate London Perriwiggmaker – being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memorie praise be given to God of the same knowing the uncertainties of this life on Earth and being desirous to settle things in order Doe make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following that is to say

Ffirst and principally I commend my soul to Almighty God my creator assuredly believing that I shall receive full pardon and free remission of all my scenes and be saved by the precious death and meritts of my blessing Saviour and Redeemer Christ Jesus and my body to the Earth from whence it was taken to bee buried in such decent and Christian manner as to my deare wife shall bee thought fitt and convenient And as concerning such worldly estate as the Lord in meritt hath lent mee my will and meaning is the same shall be disposed of as hereafter by this my will is expressed And first I doe revoke renounce frustrate and make void all wills by mee formerly made and declared and appoint this my last will and testament

Item I will that all those debts and duties as I owe to any person or persons whatsoever shall be well and truly contented and paid or ordained to bee paid

Item I give and bequeath unto my brother Thomas Strodwick the sum of 20 pounds of lawful English money to bee paid unto him by my executrix hereafter named within one month next after my said executrix shall recover the estate which I have in Ireland which my brother Henry Strodwick purchased of Tobias Deacon and shall receive the same in to her custody in possession and shall receive or make thereof the value of 200 pounds sterling But if my said brother Thomas Strodwick shall at any time molest hinder prosecute or sue my said executrix and put her to any charge or trouble then my said legacy of 20 pounds to be void And I doe only give unto him the sum of five shillings and no more to bee paid at the time aforesaid

Item I give unto Patience Deacon the daughter of Tobias Deacon and the sum of 10 pounds to be paid unto her within 2 months of such recovery of the said estate as aforesaid if she shall bee then living and of the age of 1 and 20 years or married but if she shall not be that age or married then my will is that my executrix and overseers hereafter named shall put the same forth for the best advantage of her untill she shall obtain the said age of 1 and 20 years or be married

Item I give and bequeath unto my brother Freeland his eight children which hee has by my sister Dorothy the sum of 10 pounds to be equally divided between them share and share alike and if any of them shall happen to die before such legacy shall become payable then my will and meaning is that the legacy of such as shall happen soe to die the said share of him or her soe dieing shall be equally divided between the survivor and survivors of them share and share alike

Item I give unto my brother Freeland the sum of 20 shillings

Item I give unto my wife’s sister Eleanor Batchelour the summe of 5 pounds

Item I give unto Mr John Arnold the elder five guineas

Item my will and meaning is that all the aforesaid legacies herein by mee given shall be paid within two months after my said executrix shall recover my said estate in Ireland as aforesaid and received the value of 200 pounds out of the same but if she shall not happen to receive or make out of the said estate the value of 200 pounds or more then my will is that all the said legacies soe by me given aforesaid except five shillings which I give unto my brother Thomas Strodwick to be paid unto him upon demand shall cease determine and be null and of none effect as if the same had not been given

Item all the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal of what nature or kind soever I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Margaret Strodwick whom I made my sole executrix of this my last will and testament And I doe desire and appoint Mr John Selfe and Mr John Medcalfe to be aiding assisting to my said executrix and overseers of this my last will and testament

And I doe give them for their care and trouble that they shall be put unto the summe of 10 shillings apiece In witness whereof I have on each sheet containing two sheets sett my hand and seale the day and yeare first above written Bernard Strodwick signed sealed published declared to be the last will and testament of Bernard Strodwick in the presence of John Arnold Ann Dobson James Hodder
